Archaeological excursion
Around 6,000 years ago, an underground mining area existed in the Savelsbos near Rijckholt, where prehistoric people extracted flint used to make tools such as knives and axes. These mines were abandoned in prehistoric times and only rediscovered around 1880. Between 1964 and 1972 they were excavated, and in the 1970s the researched part of the mines was made accessible to visitors. Between 2020 and 2023, the flint mine underwent a complete restoration.
Visitors walk with a guide to the mine, during which the guide explains geology, landscape, and archaeology. The guides have been trained in geology and archaeology and are themselves closely involved in research in and around the flint mine. At the mine, an underground visit is included, where the prehistoric galleries can be viewed. The entire excursion lasts 2.5 hours and includes a substantial walk through the forest.
